UCLA Summer Teacher Institute: Intersections for Educators
This professional development course for teachers is centered on the exhibition Intersections, and explores ways that art in the Fowler’s permanent collection and changing exhibitions can build understanding of contemporary global issues and help contextualize current events for K-12 students. Fowler curators, local artists, and prominent scholars will lead discussions on selected social and political issues referenced in the artworks. A binder of curricular materials will be provided. LAUSD teachers may earn two multicultural general salary point credits, or thirty professional development hours. UCLA ARTalks $45-75
ARTalk is a series of interdisciplinary, humanities-based workshops designed to enrich, refresh, and recharge K-12 educators. Using the Museum’s unique collections as catalysts, teachers are engaged in direct learning through dialogues with scholars, guest artists, and colleagues. How to Speak Shakespeare workshop

Two-day, interactive workshop for teachers focused on making the text clear to yourself and aloud to others. Presented in cooperation with the California State Summer School for the Arts, at the California Institute of the Arts, Santa Clarita. Shakespeare at the Huntington PD credit $350
Designed for 7th-12th grade English and drama teachers. Classes led by international faculty include classes in scene analysis, acting and directing techniques, curriculum development, research techniques, lectures by scholars and professionals, plus visits to LA-area museums and theaters. MOCA THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Spaces for Contemporary Art Start (CAS) 2008-09 are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for signups is June 2, but space is filling quickly. If you’re interested, act soon to ensure your spot!
CAS is a year-long professional development and multi-visit touring program for 3rd-12th grade LA County teachers and their students. CAS consists of four basic components:
1.
• Professional development: up to 30 hours—LAUSD salary points or CSULA credit (with separate fee payable to CSULA) available; PD starts with the Summer Institute, held July 9-12, 2008
2.
• The CAS Curriculum Guide: 23 chapters organized by media and by theme, with over 250 images available on DVD and overhead transparencies
3.
• Two MOCA staff-led museum visits for your students during the year
4.
• Free family workshops the first Sunday of every month FEE: LAUSD schools: $150 per teacher pair* (includes both buses)
*not limited to two teachers per school

Center Theatre Group is seeking qualified candidates to participate in a unique and exciting training and professional development opportunity for Teaching Artists. All participants receive a stipend and join a growing community of quality Teaching Artists.
The Institute provides teaching artists with training, mentorship and networking opportunities. Through a creative dramatics curriculum developed in partnership with educators and master teaching artists, participants will become familiar with Understanding by Design lesson planning techniques and the Visual and Performing Arts California State Education Standards. In the interest of promoting a sustained community of learners and arts professionals, the Institute will include two seminars focused on improving the practice of teaching theatre in public schools and the community.
